I have thought about the guns on campus question a lot. And have even looked up online some of the pros and cons of having guns on campus. One person who gives some great insight into this is Wayne Lo, the student who killed a student and a teacher on Simon Rock's campus in Great Barrington. Having grown up in south county I was able to experience the aftermath of that event in a local sense. But I recently found an interview where Lo states that guns are too easy for regular people to acquire, and that if anyone had a need for a gun they can simply call on the police who have guns. Which leads me to my point. If campus police do not have even 1 officer who is equipped with a gun, then in the event of a school shooting, we would be helpless until the NAPD arrived with a gun.
P - all persons without guns are helpless to school shootings
P - all campus police are persons without guns
C - all campus police are helpless to school shootings
All of the premises and the conclusion are "A" types. I can't seem to figure
out how to use 5.1 tools on this and figure out if its a Figure 1,2,3 or 4
I disagree with you on this one. It is statistically very unlikely that we will experience a school shooting on our campus. I know that there have been numerous ones, including one today on the Virginia Tech campus, but they almost always occur on campuses larger than ours. The NAPD is only a phone call away and it will take them all of two minutes to get to campus if need be. It really is unnecessary for our police officers on campus to have guns.
ReplyDeleteNot me, I have no opinion in there. When I said "my point" I was meaning my point of the post, which was this guys argument, if you would call it that. But again, I just took this off an interview, and assembled some premises and a conclusion based on his opinion assembled from things he said.
ReplyDeleteOh ok. I thought you were agreeing that we should in fact arm our campus police. Thanks for the clarification.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that this one is AAA-1 which means that it is unconditionally valid. As to the issue of arming the officers, it is my opinion that campus safety officers aren't even on campus enough to have an impact if they were armed. It's practically the same thing as calling the NAPD in, time wise.
ReplyDeleteHere's a tweak:
ReplyDeleteAll persons without guns are persons who are unable to stop school shootings
All MCLA campus police are persons without guns
Therefore, All MCLA campus police are persons who are unable to stop school shootings
It is a hypothetical syllogism, AAA-1 as Will says, and unconditionally valid from both standpoints. If the argument is unsound, the problem is probably with the truth of premise one, and the larger problem of suppressed evidence -- as Sam points out, the likelihood of an active shooter on campus is statistically very small, and the chance of a catastrophic accident with an officer's gun is quite real.
This does not have much to do with the post, but just something I figured out yesterday; Our campus police officers went through the same training that the state troopers go through. This means they know a lot more than we think they do. Although I am against arming our campus police, I now believe they could potentially be armed and know what they were doing hahahaha. Who knows? Maybe we will come back next semester and they will have them, but hopefully not!
ReplyDeleteThat is interesting that they go through that training.
ReplyDeleteAnother positive aspect of having them armed is that they will be an extension of the N Adams PD. and would therefore be just as capable as the armed N Adams Police. A down side would be that someone breaks into the MCLA PD station and steals a gun. It might be easier to just keep things the way they are.
Yes. You are right in all aspects of what you have said. If they were to get guns, I think they could be used the right way, but I also think that the NAPD is plenty close and we do not need to take any unnecessary risks. If we armed our police, it just puts more guns out for people to try to steal and that is never good. I guess we will just have to wait and see!!
